Wim Trompert gets his revenge. After a confusing Don Pasquale he is back again at the Reisopera with a staging that speaks for itself. His Lucia di Lammermoor, another opera by Donizetti, is set in a timeless, slanted decor, giving room for Lucias’s unstable emotions.
[...] Fortunately Trompert doesn't over load his staging with ideas that distract from the overall emotional line. He bets on a wedding dress that Lucia rips off her body in a dream, long before she is forced into the marriage, showing her evident fears. At the end he surprises. As Lucia succumbs to her sorrow, Eduardo does not stab himself with the dagger as written in the Libretto. He is defeated but remains standing. Only when Lucia’s brother's companions aim their rifles at him, does he fall.
